With the 2026 SATs coming up in the spring, it is essential for the junior class to know useful tips and tricks to properly prepare for this standardized test. For many students it can be overwhelming to know where to begin with their studies, which is where the seniors can offer their insight on how to combat the SAT, and what advice they wish to offer.
Senior class treasurer Samiha Punjala recounts the usefulness of an SAT prep-course, and explains how she spent her time at Kabir’s Prep Course, found locally in Southfield. Prep courses are extremely helpful for students because it exposes them to the test taking environment and can help students with their time management skills.
“I did a summer prep-course where we learned in the classroom and had practice tests every other weekend,” said Punjala.
SAT prep courses also prepare students for the types of questions on the test and can help strengthen skills in areas students lack. Farmington High School offers a SAT prep course called the Farmington African American Parent Network (FAAPN) ACT/SAT Bootcamp. However, some students find it best to also do outside prep courses for more specific coursework and further hands-on help.
“I was better at math than I was at reading, so I focused more on the reading parts during the practice tests, and it ended up really helping my English score,” said Punjala.
When picking a prep course, consider asking others or reading reviews to find a course that is best suited to your learning style. Senior Angela Hwang also attended Kabir’s Prep Course and offered a different perspective on the course.
“I took Kabir’s Prep Course where you go to the classroom with a bunch of other kids, but I would actually recommend getting a private tutor rather than taking the class so you can focus more on your needs,” said Hwang.
Because of how many students struggle with the math portion of the test, it’s useful to know what kinds of math problems will appear, and the type of math you should focus on.
“I’d recommend studying for pre-calc because a lot of the test focused on that,” said Hwang.
Another senior Veer Kohli earned a near perfect score of 1570, and he explained the importance of breaking down the grammar rules when it comes to mastering the English section.
“I knew I already had a pretty good math foundation so I focused more on the English section,” Kohli said. “ I learned all the grammar rules which were important.”
Seniors know first-hand how stressful this test can be, but stress is completely normal when it comes to test taking or school in general. There are many ways a student can cope with test anxiety such as exercise, deep breathing, positive affirmations, and getting a good night’s sleep. The guidance counselor’s office offers multiple pamphlets related to anxiety and mental health as it relates to schoolwork and test-taking.
“Don’t worry about it too much,” Kohli said. “In the end, it’s just a number and you still want to enjoy your time.”
