Detroit and the surrounding area has always been a hotspot for music and this summer is no exception. Many know the rush that comes with live music and seeing your favorite artists perform, and that experience is available many times over this summer. Touring musicals and artists are stopping by Detroit quite frequently this summer with many of them being the artists that many at FHS love.
With his latest album having dropped last October, nontraditional R&B singer and songwriter Khalid is coming to Michigan for the “It’s Always Summer Somewhere” tour on May 21th at the Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre at Freedom Hill. Students may know him from his song “Young Dumb & Broke” or his song “lovely” with Billie Eilish. Tickets for this concert can be found on Ticketmaster.
If R&B is not your favorite genre, many rap artists are also touring to Michigan this summer. In particular, Kid Cudi is performing at the Pine Knob Music Theatre on May 23rd as a stop on “The Rebel Raggers Tour.” For those who tuned in, Grammy award winning rap artist Baby Keem dropped his album “Ca$ino” in February of this year after a four year hiatus from dropping music. You can listen to his new album live as well as fan favorites on May 26th at The Fillmore Detroit during one of his tour stops for the Ca$ino tour. If you’re looking for a more genre bending rap artist, MGK will be performing his unique blend of rock and rap on June 16th at the Pine Knob Music Theatre as a stop on his Lost Americana Tour.
One of the biggest genres in the world is pop, and the pop girlies have dropped a lot of music this past year, some of which are touring to the great state of Michigan. Many of you may have heard Hemlock Springs’ debut single “girlfriend” on Tiktok. Springs is performing at the Saint Andrew’s Hall on May 31st. “The Apple Tree Under the Sea” tour comes with the release of her latest album of the same name. Another newer artist with a quickly establishing cult following is Audrey Hobert, who will perform songs from her critically acclaimed debut album, “Who’s the Clown” at the Masonic Temple on May 29th. A more seasoned pop artist also touring this summer is Kesha who brings “The Freedom Tour” to the Pine Knob Music Theatre June 5th.
Concerts, while expensive, are an incredible musical experience. You don’t need to attend the concerts of the large artists with millions of fans in order to get that experience, many great artists aren’t popular enough yet to even have their concerts shown on websites like Ticketmaster. For those who live in the Farmington area, Rhythms in Riley Park host free concerts Friday nights in the month of June. Royal Oak Music Theatre, located in Royal Oak has a minimum age of 16. It offers cheaper ticket prices and a chance to discover lesser known artists. This summer, The Wingspan encourages all who can to go out and explore the local music scene of their area.
