The Wingspan is the student voice and newspaper of Farmington High School located in Farmington, Michigan.

The Wingspan staff adheres to the following code of ethics:

Conflicts of Interest

Staff must avoid any conflict of interest with a story by not being personally involved with the story with the stories they cover. Any exceptions must be cleared by the EIC and adviser. This includes:

  • A reporter should not cover a club, event, sport or organization in which they are a member. They may consult with other reporters who are working on a story about such groups.
  • Staff members including the adviser may not serve as sources for any story unless it cannot be avoided due to extenuating circumstances. Any exception must be cleared by the EIC and adviser. 
  • Staff members may not use family members as sources. 

Fabrication

Staff must not submit anything for publication that is untrue or that they have reason to believe is untrue. This includes: 

  • Making up information, falsifying or manipulating quotes (even with a source’s permission), making up anecdotes, creating fictitious sources or citing nonexistent research. 
  • If a reporter believes that a source is not telling the truth, they will seek out another source and let the EIC and adviser know. 

Plagiarism 

Staff may not submit plagiarized material. Plagiarism is defined as submitting another person’s work or portions of their work, whether it has been published or not, as their own work without properly using quotations and attributing the source. 

AI

In order to maintain our journalistic integrity, students may not use AI to generate stories or visuals. The use of AI is strictly prohibited for The Wingspan.
